Passing on Skills and Traditions


In a world that is increasingly busy, are unique skills being passed from one generation to another? Making an effort to teach your children, grandchildren, or apprentices the special skills that you have acquired is vital! We all have good intentions of doing just that, but there is always something else that needs to be done. Sometimes it is necessary to pick a date on the calendar and dedicate a few hours of sharing and then a few follow ups. If you have dedicated your life to some special skill or knowledge pass it on!

It seems that some languages, the skills of the artisans and even good communication are being diminished. Embracing technology can save, enhance and offer irreplaceable skills to others, especially if you have no apprentice. Remember that patience’s is a pre-requisite when teaching others! What seems easy to you may be frustrating to a leaner. Everyone learns differently and each generation experiences a different view of normality. Adjust your training as needed. All you can do is offer what you know and the skills you have acquired. Though if you expect your children to follow in your (career) footsteps, make sure it is their choice. Make sure you ask them what they want!
If you have any family traditions or family recipes that you don’t want lost in time - start teaching now! Save those important family customs. Make sure those spiritual practices are offered too. Maybe you are a skilled gardener; the vegetable patch is definitely making a comeback. If you can sew or knit, teach someone in your family how it is done. You could be good at photography, golf, fishing, calligraphy, painting, finances, carpentry, maintenance, auto repairs, etiquette, football or some other area of knowledge. Give something meaningful to the ones you love!

  The breadcrumbs of misogyny are easily seen in a history of women’s suffering and denial of rights. Patriarchal religious societies that purposely put men first for at least two thousand years are now witnessing its noxious failure. Corrupt governments that are self-focused are quickly measured by angry public sentiment. Governments without gender balance have become dens of mistrust. Lack of respect towards women in male dominated workplaces can be uncomfortable or become dangerous. Systemic sexism developed slowly; its design seeping toxically through millennia and distorting daily life. The changing role of fathers as parents has brought dramatic differences to the family unit with a century. During the difficult war years and great depression men kept their emotions hidden in order to portray certain strengths of character and calm. They were told that men don’t cry even though they had witnesses many horrors and heartaches – their role as head of the household was to be invincible and ever-strong in front of their families. This restrictive rhetoric led many to self-imposed emotional prisons, where escapism often led to substance abuse. This created an invisible wall that partially separated families from really knowing each other at a deeper level.
